Hostels are on tongues. First months of a new year brought the sum up of the previous one and the predictions for future trends. If we will take a closer look at the hospitality industry we will see what trends exactly are on the spotlight.
Shared economy and experience have been leading topics of the past year. The growing potential of the hostel market was noticed by the biggest brands like Accor and it is said that this year trend mostly will focus on improving social and common areas of most of the hotels.
Hostels inspire huh?
15th Hostelworld Conference was held in Dublin at the end of January. Although the conference itself was mostly focused on the travel industry overall on which there weren’t too many discoveries if you follow the industry by yourself.
What was the most inspiring was to see that actually the words „hostel community” and „hostel generation” became real and viral. More than 100 hostel owners, managers and hostel-related people have gathered in one place, to network, have fun and to talk.
There wasn’t too many information to take for your business from the panel talks but that’s not what matters the most. What you could see where people who have ideas, vision and really do believe in the idea of the hostel.
Hostelworld introducing what have done during the past year with its image and how they worked to change the perception of the word „hostel” wasn’t bad either.
Since we are right now in the times where Millennials are dominating the tourism industry (which I’m one of them by the way) and the new generations are appearing which soon will have big meaning for the hoteliers, it becomes really promising that the hostel industry will grow even more.
It’s not anymore about giving the bed and lowest facilities for the lowest price.
It became more about creating the generation of the people who care. Who cares about giving the best local experience to its guests, to create a social and friendly atmosphere.
To be passionate about the things that we do. We are the new generation, we are the people who create the hostel. We are the community. And we really care.
Even thou the business is still a business and we all need money in order to leave, grow and develop, I believe that hostels are something more than that. They have an idea behind which, in the world full of so much hate, might change the future generation of people. Who by travelling and using hostels, where they learn to share and create friends, might bring new ideas and a new point of views which eventually might change the world.*

So, hostel people lets keep on changing the hostel’s perception and grow together.
*But that might be just my hopeful and too optimistic thoughts (after the glass(es) of wine).
